New York
New York has 14 millions inhabitants. It is situated on the eastern coast of the U.S.A. at the mouth of the Hudson River and the East River. It is an important sea port. The New York City named „The Big Apple“ . It is the city that never sleeps. New York is divided to five sections. Manhattan Island, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Richmond better known as Staten Island. Harlem is situated in the north Manhattan and it is called a black quarter. Manhattan offers many parks. The famous park is the Central Park. Broadway is a very famous centre of theatres. The Wall Street is the centre of financial life. The twin tower of the World Trade centre destroyed in 2001 after terorrist’s attack. Madison Square Garden is the place to go to see basketball and hockey games, rock concerts, rodeos, and even the circus. The city is home to a number of zoos, including Bronx¢s Zoo, one of the best in the world.
New York was founded in the first half of the 17th century . The original small settlement was situated on a part of the Manhattan Island. The first inhabitants were the Dutch. One of the oldest buildings in New York is the School house on Staten Island.
The Statue of Liberty stands on the Liberty Island. It is a statue of a woman who symbolizes the freedom and friendship between the French and American people during the American revolution. She holds a burning torch in her right hand and a law book in her left one. The Statue was constructed in France according to a project of the architect Frederick August Bartholdi. It was a gift of the French people to the Americans. The framework is made from iron. The designer of the framework was Eiffel. The height is 46m and it stands on the pedestal. The statue was fully assembled in Paris and in 1886 it was dissambled, shipped to N.Y. and erected there in the honour of the 110th anniversary of the birth of the U.S.A. In 1980 statue was reconstructed.
Skyscrapers are situated especially in Manhattan. One of the most famous skyscraper is called the Empire State Building on the Fifth Avenue. It has about 102 floors. At the top there is a TV tower and a restaurant. People can go by lifts which are very quick. They can get to the 86th floor in one minute only. There they must change lifts to steps up to the very top. The Empire State Building is the most visited one and it has about 30 000 visitors every day. It was built in 1931. It was the highest building in the world. Another famous sky scraper is the Rockefeller Centre.
